How to Get the Most Out of Career Fairs

In just a short time from now (two more months), the CLA Career & Graduate Program Fair will be here. If you have never attended a career fair, it could seem a bit intimidating. How do you prepare for such an event? We have a few tips for you on how to get the most out of your career fair experience.

1. Have a pen or pencil available for notes.
This is a very important item to remember. It is extremely helpful for you to make note of different organizations and their contact information, as well as any extra insight they may give you into their company.

2. Bring resumes and a folder or portfolio to hold your job-searching materials.
Having your resumes on hand during a career fair is an excellent idea. Leaving your resume with potential employers could increase your chances on being contacted.

3. Research information about the companies and organizations prior to attending the career fair.
Obtaining prior knowledge about companies you are interested in can give you an advantage when meeting with a recruiter at a career fair. It will allow you to discuss the company's current situations.

4. Use your time wisely.
Determine where employers are located and in what order to visit each booth. Focus on three companies that you are interested in the most.

5. Be Direct.
Introduce yourself, including your name and career interests. Let the employer know exactly what you are interested in. Remember to use good eye contact and a firm handshake.
