Career Fair Time

A lot of Liberal Arts students may avoid going to the Industrial Roundtable and other career fairs simply because they think companies won't be interested in them and what their major is. Sure, these companies are here to recruit mostly engineers but hey, this is an engineering school. That doesn't mean there aren't opportunities for other majors as well.

Story time. My current roommate who is in the same major as I am (Visual Communications Design) went to the Krannert Career Fair last year. She didn't expect anything to come of it but simply went to see if anyone would be interested. This career fair isn't for graphic design (nor is any other career fair on campus) but she still went. She talked to a lot of companies about her skills and what she could bring to the table. She ended up speaking to a representative for Land's End who turned out to be the Art Director for the company. Next thing you know, she has a summer internship in Madison, WI working in the graphic design department for Land's End. Crazy right?

Even if you go to a Career Fair and nothing comes of it, you still get the opportunity to practice interview skills that you will need later to get a job. I really wish I had listened to people who had told me to go to career fairs to look for internships earlier in my college career. Getting an internship is great because it often leads to a permanent job. So get out there! Even if you're a senior, it's never too late to have some new experiences and meet new people. You just might get a job from it.
