Today in our intern meeting we talked about personal branding. In this day and age, it is difficult to find any kind of business, company, or corporation that doesn't have some kind of recognizable logo or brand. We are surrounded by brands so much that we hardly even notice this subtle advertising anymore.
But have you ever thought of branding yourself?
Think about it: what qualities do you associate with your favorite brands? Maybe you think about dependability when you're looking at car brands, or speed and efficiency when you're deciding what kind of smartphone you want to purchase. All these products project a specific image to the general public in order to try and attract customers.
As a college student, or soon to be college graduates, you can project your own personal image in order to sell yourself to potential employers. First, think about what makes you as asset to the company. Are you a fast learner, good communicator, or a determined leader? Knowing your own strengths and being able to articulate them is an essential skill all college students should learn. Once you know what qualities best describe you, then figure out a way to project that image to others. Create a killer portfolio to demonstrate the quality of your work, or personally introduce yourself to an employer to show them your determination. These actions will show your superiors that you aren't just talk, and that you are ready to deliver.
And finally, think about why your specific qualities are necessary for the company you apply to. Make sure they understand that not hiring you will be the biggest mistake they make all year. If you are able to explain all the benefits and innovative ideas you can bring to a company, it will make you stand out from everyone else applying for that job.
