Why Liberal Arts?

Why Liberal Arts?
By: Emily Larrabee

When I was growing up, I was a social butterfly. I could talk to anyone and everyone. I could also talk all day and night. It got me into A LOT of trouble at school. So, when I was trying to decide what to major in, there was no doubt Communication was the career path for me. After my first year, I was asked, “What do you plan to do with Communication?” To be honest, I didn’t know. Afterwards, I felt ashamed not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. Everyone else seemed to have their lives planned out so why didn’t I? Then I realized, that is the beauty of being a Liberal Arts student! There are so many opportunities and possibilities to be taken advantage of that it is so hard to pick just one career path.
As Liberal Arts students, we tend to look at our majors the wrong way. This can sometimes leads to a lack of confidence for students and their futures.  We compare ourselves to people in other fields and try to become something we are not. Instead, if we focus on our own personal field and have an open mind about what our future holds, we will be very successful! Many companies today are looking for students involved in the Liberal Arts because they have the skills to make the companies successful.
I want to share some reasons why having a Liberal Arts degree is beneficial to you and your future career:

1    It is very employable- The idea that Liberal Arts students cannot get jobs in today’s workforce is a myth. Your Bachelor of Arts degree makes you very employable. Lots of companies today want to hire people with the skills that Liberal Arts students excel in, such as communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.

2    It expands your mind- Liberal Arts students take classes that help them to broaden their horizons and discover new ways of thinking. The diversity of classes you can take as a Liberal Arts student help develop you into a well-rounded person. They also can be very interesting and can even help lead you to what you really enjoy learning!

3     It is timeless- Being able to communicate and write effectively is something that will never go out of style. This can help you to keep moving up in your career. Many of the skills in other fields have an expiration date.

4    It teaches you how to learn- One thing I have noticed from being a Liberal Arts student is that I am learning so much every single day, and I love it. Employers hire new workers that strive to learn and are able to learn quickly. Companies want to grow and learn new things and Liberal Arts students are the perfect people to hire for companies.
